This local house reminded me of a vacation home, even in the dead of winter. I thought painting the canvas in fire-engine red would be an interesting beginning for this “cool” scene. When you look at my work, can you tell what color I started with as a background? Unique, personalized gifts are enjoying a resurgence of interest. People buy and give gifts to build and enhance their emotional connection with the recipient. The gift itself becomes the means to an end and that end is to strengthen relationships.

Artists Statement Today I am painting mostly in acrylics on canvas. I select a hue for imprimatura from a variety of background colors – everything from pastel pink to bright red and from sea foam green to lilac and lavender – one that will lend voice and personality to the subject and help me “paint it into life” as the work evolves. Whether a home is traditional or contemporary, large or modest, I try to capture an unabashed sense of joy in painting it. Partly through the delight I take in creating it and also joy in the occasion it honors and the happy memories a place evokes for those who commission its portrait. Therefore, I delight in hearing remarks such as “I like your happy colors.”

An original painting can be a great, unique gift for a special occasion like a milestone birthday, an anniversary, retirement, moving away, remodeling, building or purchasing a new home. You may commission the painting yourself or present a gift certificate that will allow the recipient to work directly with the artist on a portrait that is exactly what he/she wants. People make different gift choices depending upon the occasion for the gift. Birthdays, followed by anniversaries, new baby, friendship/thank you, and weddings are the top five gifting occasions. Christmas, Mother’s Day and Valentine’s Day are the most popular gift holidays.

Gifting is an important motivator for people to go shopping. According to a Unity Marketing study, the average American spends $1,934 per year buying gifts. The typical gifter spends less than half of his/her annual budget gift budget before October and more than half between October and December.

This painting, the largest I've completed to date at 4 x 5 ft, has been sold but limited edition prints are still available, framed or unframed, on canvas or on watercolor paper. Right now, I'm working on one even larger than this (5 x 6 ft) depicting the Christmas "horse parade" in Lebanon, which will take place on Saturday, December 6 at 1 pm and 7 pm.
