"We had some daytime photos of the house and collected nighttime shots of other homes decorated with “icicle lights” for reference. I emailed the customer photos as I painted and then we’d talk about the portrait on the phone as it evolved. I think everyone ended up pleased with the result, as all the surprises were good ones."

The person whose "homeplace" this is told Carol her family had always wanted to put a candle in every window at Christmas-time but didn't want to risk the fire hazard.

This was the artist's original inspiration for painting many more nighttime and holiday scenes.

They had some daytime photos of the house and collected nighttime shots of other homes decorated with "icicle lights" for reference. Carol emailed the customer photos as she painted and then talked about the portait on the phone as it evolved. Everyone ended up pleased with the result, as all the surprises were good ones.

The completed work is a product of the artist's imagination after looking at many different photographs, and talking with the gift giver about her visits to the home.

When selling equipment to the printing industry, Carol worked with many third- and fourth-generation businesses that were justifiably proud of their long-standing reputations for quality and service. This picture of an early delivery truck celebrates the heritage of Natorp's family business.

Old black and white photographs may be very small, missing details or hard to translate. But homeowners can usually tell the artist enough about a place, or their memories of it, to fill in the blanks. Carol will work with whatever's available.
