When discussing the "summer" painting on the right, the purchaser of this barn portrait talked about how her family always wanted to put a candle in every window at Christmas-time. Our conversations led to this finished painting. Limited edition giclee prints were made for family members in several diferent sizes. Finally, a digital image of this painting was used to create porcelain Christmas tree ornaments.

Paintings can be created in any colors for any season. One of the reasons I enjoy collaborating with people who commission artwork is that they often lead me in directions I wouldn't otherwise go.

For example, doing this work sparked my current fascination with night-time scenes.

I often get porcelain Christmas ornaments made personalized with images of the home portraits I paint. These come in round or oval shape for $10 each. In our Pendleton studio (#507), on the fifth floor across from the elevator, you’ll also find original Christmas ornaments made by ceramicist Glenda Suttman. Last year, she designed gingerbread “beach babes” and “beach hunks” for those of you who spend time in Florida. Her creation for this year will be for dog-lovers and Wicked/Wizard of Oz-lovers.

Ever seen the rings of Saturn through one of the big telescopes at the Cincinnati Observatory Center in Mt. Lookout? If not, I recommend checking it out!

Several hundred people visit our studios at the Pendleton Art Center on the Final Fridays of each month, enjoying complimentary wine and hors d'oeuvres while seeing the studios and work spaces of over 150 artists. I have the good fortune of sharing Studio 507 with pastel landscape artist Stacie Seuberling and ceramicist Glenda Suttman. As you can see, we had a few ghouls visiting during October Final Friday on Halloween night!

Carol Rentschler will exhibit her fabric artistry during Final Friday in November. Valet parking's available at the door for $4 or there is a free shuttle from the corner of Reading Rd. and Pendleton St. (See www.pendletonartcenter.com for more info) Please visit us.

This portrait of an early Natorp’s delivery truck celebrates the rich heritage of this local family business. Because the evergreens in the back reminded me of Christmas, we played with making holiday cards from the original painting.

When I sold equipment to the printing industry, I was privileged to work with many third- and fourth-generation businesses that, like Natorp’s, were justifiably proud of their long-standing reputations for quality and service.

Does your family operate a business you would like to commemorate with a portrait someday?

Not only does the magic of digital imaging allow you to have aprons, coffee cups, and greeting cards personalized with your home portraits, it also enables artists like me to create variations of a painting. (or show you how something will look before I actually paint it!)

Ever been to a "painting exchange" for Christmas? Last year, I enjoyed this Cincinnati Art Club tradition for the very first time and was lucky enough to get a watercolor done by Kay Worz, who is now President of the club.

This will probably be the painting I exchange this year. It was part of several studies I did overlooking the city from the driveway going up to the Cincinnati Art Museum, one hot summer day in July.

This house consumed much of their time and energy for years and she loved making it uniquely theirs, especially with all the festive decorations at Christmas time. Now they were moving to a brand new house and, though she was glad and had no regrets, this portrait, a gift from her big sister, evokes fond memories of the holidays everyone in the family shared there.

I received several different photos of this home in Charlotte, NC and was asked to add the “icicle lights” and make it a night-time scene when commissioned by her sister to paint this portrait as a Christmas gift.

We've since made Christmas tree ornaments and notepaper with a digital image of the original painting.
